Preschool teachers will be compensated

The government will compensate preschool teachers working under temporary contracts for postponing the beginning of academic year for kindergartens and nurseries by two months. The Ministry of Education decided last week that children below five will join schools on November 1, as protection measures from swine flu. The decision affects badly teachers with temporary contracts as they sign their nine-month contracts at the beginning of the academic year, while they don’t get paid during summer. According to the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions, there are more than 2000 preschool teachers working for 300 kindergartens and most of them work with temporary contracts. The compensation will be paid monthly until the opening of preschools or finding fulltime jobs.
The Ministry of Labour called on Wednesday upon those teachers to seek their payment through the Unemployment Insurance Scheme. The Minister of Labour, Dr Majeed bin Mohsen Al Alawi instructed concerned officials in his ministry to work on the compensation packages for the teachers. He said that those with permanent contract and were sacked will get 60 percent of their basic pay or not more than BD500 or less than BD150. Secondary school graduates teachers with temporary contracts will be paid monthly BD120 paid, while university graduates will get BD150.
