Traffic Authority has urged parents to not allow their children who are less than ten years to sit in the front seat of the car. The calling went after 594 violations were registered in the first five months of the year.
Head of Traffic Culture, Major Mosa Al Dossairi, said in a statement that the registered violations were the highest so far for the same period of previous years. He explained that article-2 of the traffic law clearly stated that since March 1990, children less than 10 years or infants were banned from travelling in the front seat next to the driver.
To deal with the rising problem, the Consultative Council (Shura) is pushing for a law, which stipulated imprisonment for drivers allowing children on board to sit in front seat or on their laps. It also punishes those who put their children on board in baby seats without seatbelts.
Tabled by Shura member Fuad Haji, the proposal aims to protect the right of infants and children who often sustain minor or severe injuries because of carelessness by adults for not following safety-driving measures.
The law is expected to force many drivers to obey the regulations to avoid the tough punishments.
