Article by- Suad Hamada (Women Gateway) An international organisation has urged Bahrain for more empowerment for women in journalism, as despite representing 50% of journalists in Bahrain only less than ten females are holding top posts such as head of department or editors in chief. A recently released report by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), attributed the lack of empowerment in the sector to many reasons, especially that quality programming on women and women’s rights are rare. It also highlights that the reasons could also be the stereotyped image of women that is often convey in the media.
The report indicates that women make up 20% of Bahrain Radio and Television Corporation employees, while women journalists in Bahraini Journalists’ Association (the only official union for the journalists) make up 15% of its total membership, in which it has 600 members- 515 men and 85 women. The association’s board counts 2 women in a team of 11 (18%). According to the report the association has a programme to support women journalists and raise junior women journalists’ awareness of their professional rights and support their promotion in their media institutions.
The report also mentions that the Media Faculty of Bahrain University is the main school for media studies in the country. According to figures released by the Bahraini Ministry of Education in 2008, between 2001 and 2007: 61.46% graduates of the Faculty of Information Sciences were female students. Besides Bahrain, the report that is entitled “Women Journalists: Partners in Trade Union Leadership”, also reviews situations of female journalists from 13 Arab countries. It also highlights general gender issues in the region.
The report is posted in the IFS’s website
