  Bahrain to Commemorate UN’s International Year of Youth

In line with the United Nations launch of the International Year of Youth globally on 12 August 2010 in New York, the UN Information Centre (UNIC) and Ajial Organisation announced a work plan to mark the Year by organizing various activities in the Kingdom.

This initiative was announced at a gathering organized by UNIC and Ajial Organisation on Tuesday, 27 July 2010 at the UNIC Library that was attended by the Heads of Student Affairs of Bahrain’s Universities to discuss the plan of action regarding the activities to be tailored during the International Year of Youth that was declared by the UN General Assembly in December 2009.

Mr Nejib Friji, Director of UNIC opened the meeting by welcoming Mr Yousif Dawood, Executive Director of Ajial Organisation, his team members and the representatives of Bahrain’s Universities’ Student Affairs.

Mr Friji stated that In December 2009, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring the International Year of Youth signifying the importance the international community places on integrating youth related issues into national, regional and global development agendas. Under the theme “Dialogue and mutual understanding” the Year aims to promote the ideals of peace, respect for human rights and solidarity across generations, cultures, religions and today, youth represent 18% of the global population or 1.2 billion people. 87% of youth live in developing countries facing challenges brought about by limited access to resources, healthcare, education, training, employment and economic opportunities.

Mr. Friji added that youth often lead by example such as practicing green and healthy lifestyles, promoting innovative uses of new technologies including utilizing mobile devices and online social networks and by bridging gaps to foster the development of inclusive societies.

Mr. Friji reiterated youth’s contributions to community national, regional and global development saying the UN had urged its member states to mark the UN proclaimed International Year with a focus on how these challenges are addressed and how youth’s potential is harnessed directly impacts current social and economic conditions.

The UN global launch of the International Year of Youth in New York will demonstrate the entire UN System's commitment to youth development, Friji said adding the UN country Teams in the Gulf region put youth at the center of their strategies and partnership with the GCC states.

Mr Yousif Dawood, Executive Director of Ajial Organisation that the theme “Dialogue and Mutual understanding” is amongst the most educative principles that the people of Bahrain have inherited from their ancestors. He added that our traditions are based on national and social solidarity and called on the youth to rely on work and sustainability and the need to inject all these principles in the minds of the youth. He stated that the youth in Bahrain have a key role in implementing the reform and development programmes of His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa, the King of Bahrain.

Mr Dawood further stated that Ajial is striving to initiate programmes that aim at helping youth implement their talents and skills and reinforce their attachment to the ever increasing challenges of our times. He pledged to continue supporting youth as key contributors and achievers is the solid national tissue. He praised the UN initiative that declared the International Year of Youth.

Adopting the theme “Together As A Team, We Lay the Ground”, Ajial announced the establishment of several committees to follow up on the activities recommended by the UN Internation Year of Youth. They also decided to organize substantive cultural and sports activities during several UN International Days such as Non Violence Day, International Peace Day, The Ageing Day, The Disabled Persons Day, The International Day to End Violence Against Women, The International Day of Solidarity with The Palestinian People and the International Volunteer Day.

Several representatives from the Universities’ Student Affairs delivered statements and pledged their support and contribution to raise awareness within their universities.
