Supreme Council for Women delegation to present report at UN

Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council for Women and head of the Kingdom's official delegation appointed to discuss the national report on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) Dr Shaikha Mariam bint Hassan Al Khalifa affirmed today the kingdom of Bahrain's continued support to elevate Bahraini women and their empowerment in all fields.

She said that this move comes within the framework of His Mmajesty the King's reforms which relies on the authority of the law and providing the appropriate environment to maintain human rights on all levels.

This came in an exclusive interview with Bahrain news agency, Dr Shaikha Mariam on the occasion of the delegations preparations to discuss the national report at the UN October 30. Dr Shaikha Mariam indicated that Bahrain's membership in CEDAW affirms Bahrain's move towards elevating and empowering Bahraini women along with supporting its role in the development process.

She said that the national report was based on both a scientific and practical methodology. Moreover, the head of the delegation indicated that other international reports were also reviewed in the process of compiling the report at hand. Dr Shaikha Mariam said that this report included the actual status of women with regard to legislation and the challenges it faces in further development its role. Dr Shaikha Mariam said that the report went through several phases following the directives of the chairwoman of the Supreme Council for Women Shaikha Sabika bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa and the formation of a national work group comprising around 28 official and civic establishments. These various bodies helped in gathering the necessary information and a specialised team of experts from the University of Bahrain were assigned to prepare the report.

She also added that various workshops and training programmes were organised by the council for ministries and government establishments in addition to women civic and political societies. The delegation to discuss the national report was also rovided with various workshops and training to be able to undertake their duties in the UN.
