Education might be the theme of the celebration of the newly introduced Bahraini Women’s Day to be marked on December 1.A meeting was held this week between representatives from the General Secretariat of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW) and the Women Union to discuss the celebration process of the occasion. The Women Union recommended choosing education as the permanent theme of the day as December 2008 is the 80 anniversary of regular education for female in Bahrain. The union also suggested that sub-theme could be chosen every year according to the dimension of the National Strategy of Women Empowerment and international campaigns concerning women. The participants decided to make the day with joint statement and the organisation of a competition for school students. First lady and Chairwoman of the SCW Shaikha Sabika bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa decided to mark the first day of December every year as the Bahraini Women’s Day to acknowledge females’ contributions to development. The date was selected after reaching an agreement with NGOs, especially women organisations, while hoping that women would accomplish their dreams and continue to be treated as active partners to males.
